Alumni Update:

Following her fellowship in Uganda, Emily spent another six years living in Kenya, DRC, Nigeria, Cambodia, and Liberia working on a series of global health initiatives for Population Services International, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Liberia’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. After graduating with an MBA from the Yale School of Management this spring, she will be moving to Minneapolis, MN to work for Medtronic, a global medical device innovation company, where she will focus on emerging markets strategy and technology for cardiac care initiatives.

Alumni Update:

Devan is still in Boston with her wonderful husband and fellow PiAf-er, David Bartels! They welcomed their second child in later summer of 2019. After being a staff anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital for the last 2 years, she moved to Williamstown, MA, to start working as an anesthesiologist at Berkshire Medical Center. As her family gets a bit older, she is looking forward to engaging more in volunteering abroad including in southern Africa.

Alumni Update:

David graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2013 and is completing an internal medicine internship. Then, he will start his Anesthesiology, Critical Care, & Pain Medicine residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He and Devan Darby (also a PiAf 2006-07 Fellow) got married in June 2014 in Virginia.

Fellow Bio:

David graduated from Princeton in 2006 with degrees in Geosciences and African Studies. He worked with the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric HIV/AIDS Initiative in Lesotho from 2006-07. He then worked with Dr. Christopher J.L. Murray at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington and the Harvard Initiative for Global Health on a World Bank-funded road traffic injuries project and the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010, which was published in the Lancet in December 2012. He graduated from Harvard Medical School with his MD in 2013, and will be pursuing Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. His interests include health system management, health metrics, peri-operative systems, trauma care, critical care, pediatric, acute pain, and regional anesthesiology, and global health.

Alumni Update:

Carolyn is currently living and working in Chicago, IL. Since her fellowship, she has been working in public health policy and social policy. She did program evaluation of public health programs for the US Department of Health and Human Services. Now she is pursuing a PhD in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern.

Arthur is working at Stripe, a software company helping to power entrepreneurs around the world by connecting them to the financial system. Arthur lives in San Francisco, California.

Immediately after PiAf, Amaka attended law school, and then clerked with a federal judge for a year. She then went on to work in the international arbitration practice of the global law firm Shearman & Sterling. In January, she quit to work with a think tank based in Nigeria. She also had a baby last year who’s turning 1 on May 7!
