Alumni Update:

Anne moved to New York City in July 2018 to work at ideas42, a nonprofit behavioral science design lab. Her work right now primarily focuses on economic mobility in New York City, but they do Africa-based work as well.

Fellow Bio:

Anne (UVA ‘11) graduated with a major in History. She is originally from Long Beach, CA. At UVA, Anne was the president of UVA’s chapter of Invisible Children, worked as a teacher’s aide in a local preschool, and participated in Sustained Dialogue. She studied abroad in Uganda and Rwanda through SIT and interned with Amnesty International in Washington, D.C. Anne is excited about returning to East Africa, learning about the unique history and culture of Ethiopia, attempting to master Amharic, and hopefully getting to travel around Africa.

Alumni Update:

Amanda has begun a new career chapter as an environmental data scientist with Bayer Crop Science. As an environmental data scientist she designs her goals around global impact so that locations around the world have access to the latest data and models available to make improved decisions in the agricultural sector.

Fellow Bio:

Amanda (Princeton ‘11) is a Mechanical Engineer from Trinidad and Tobago. At Princeton, she was a Residential College Advisor for Rockefeller College, OA leader and member of the Cap and Gown Club. She earned a certificate in the Program in Sustainable Energy and hopes to pursue a career in this field. While at Princeton, Amanda has done extensive research in the Princeton Combustion laboratory on alternative fuels and renewable energy under the advisorship of Professor Frederick Dryer, and hopes to continue research in this field in graduate school. While in Kenya next year, she plans to take her engineering and sustainable energy skills to the field while working in Nyumbani Village in order to gain some real world experience. Along the way she hopes to pick up some of the local languages, learn to cook a lot of the food and absorb as much of the diverse culture Kenya has to offer as she possibly can.

Fellow Bio:

Alicia LeClair (Whitman ‘11) just graduated as a gender studies major with a concentration in race, gender and reproduction, and an education minor.  Originally from Seattle, WA, Alicia enjoys running, hiking, and meditating in her spare time.  At Whitman, Alicia founded a meditation club, taught at a local high school, studied abroad in Mali, and led local at-risk youth in outdoor adventures. While in Cape Town next year, Alicia looks forward to immersing herself in South African culture, exploring the natural beauty of the country, and forming many long-lasting friendships.

Alumni Update:

Alec currently lives in Boston, where he is working for the Harvard Clinical Research Institute. In summer 2015, he will move down to New Orleans to begin his MD/MPH at Tulane School of Medicine.

Fellow Bio:

Alec (Tufts ‘10) studied Economics and Comparative Politics with a focus on developing regions. While at Tufts, Alec competed on the varsity swimming and diving team, as well as the varsity sailing team . He also spent a semester abroad studying at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. For the past year, Alec has been working for a public relations and communications firm specializing in the arts and non-profits. In Rwanda next year, he can’t wait to commune with the Mountain gorillas and sail on Lake Kivu.
